Harnessing the Power of Sound in Your Zazzle Product Videos

Hey Zazzlepreneurs!

Recently there has been a discussion the use of sound (particularly music) in product videos. While some creators, like myself, have a personal preference for silent platforms, the question arises, does adding sound to your videos hold ANY strategic value?

We now know (if you read my earlier Zazzle forum thread) that creating engaging product videos is a key strategy for any Zazzlepreneur looking to captivate potential buyers due to the emphasis search engines now place on directing customers to sites that have engaging video content.

But how important is the inclusion of sound in these videos?

I have written an article which takes a deep dive into this topic.

Leah, thanks so much for raising this issue. As a user experience consultant, I can definitively say that sound on the kinds of videos we would post on our product pages is not advisable. The reason is it’s not necessary or expected, especially if it’s music, which means it’s just going to annoy the majority of users. While it’s true that music can have an emotional effect on us, it’s just not appropriate for product mockup videos on Zazzle. I have no doubt that this is why Etsy product videos don’t have sound. Many people browse for products at work, and music suddenly (and unnecessarily) playing in a Zazzle product video is sure to aggravate (and possibly embarrass) those people.

You expect sound in a YouTube video or a marketing video on a company’s website, but not in a product mockup video on sites like Etsy and Zazzle. There’s a reason why social media sites default to muted videos (see https://www.newbreedrevenue.com/blog/silent-video-marketing?hs_amp=true). Also, 92% of people prefer viewing with no sound (https://verbit.ai/sound-on-sound-off-64-marketers-using-video-see-benefit-of-captions/#:~:text=In%20...).

I really hope Zazzle will do away with the sound option on videos because it could negatively affect everyone’s sales if customers are annoyed by a video with sound on one product and assume every product has videos with sound. A simple slideshow or in situ video focusing on your product (not fireworks or falling glitter, etc.) is the best way to market your products in a professional way. Let your designs speak for themselves. The old adage of keeping it simple really is the best advice for product videos on Zazzle. It will also save us all from wasting time sourcing music for our videos!

Thanks again, Leah, because I think this is an important issue.

Thank you, it was actually another member asking for advice on this issue that prompted me to look into it,

It is VERY helpful to get feedback from someone with experience in the field so thank you for your contribution. May I add it to my blog post - with credit and link back to you (your affiliate referral code included) as it is a missing piece to the puzzle regarding the type of videos we are creating for display on Zazzle.

ps. And note taken re fireworks and glitter as I have both of those! I am a maximalist by nature so definitely can go OTT at times and need help dialing things back! So thank you for that also.

That's so kind, Leah, but no credit necessary. You're welcome to use anything you found useful. 😉 And OMG, I'm so sorry about the fireworks and glitter! We user experience folks are often killjoys 😂🙈
