Skipped SMS verification, but still receiving Chat messages

I don't want to give my phone number for the Chat verification, so I skipped it. (Never wanted to be a customer service agent.) However, I still keep receiving messages from customers.

Is it possible that they don't get any notification that I will never read their messages, so they're just waiting for the reply? This should be solved as soon as possible, it causes a very bad customer experience.

I read somewhere in one of the threads on this subject that a few designers tested this out, and the person sending the initial message is never notified that the person on the other end is not verified and therefore cannot reply.

That's not good.  Perhaps those of us that have decided "not" to opt in to this verification type should place a note in the bio or store about sections informing customers that our stores do not participate in the onsite chat option and perhaps redirect them to an email address they can reach us at or Zazzle customer service for assistance.

I did it (the character limit is not very generous), but they don't really seem to care.

I am not signed up. I answered a message and the customer said thank you. So I guess they got it.

That's interesting. How did you get to the message to answer it?

Same way I always have. Click on the Chat Notification at the top, answer and click send. Been chatting with other Zazzlers too. Or maybe when they asked for my phone number, I answered so quickly and automatically, I forgot I was compliant. That's a possibility too.

Has this been addressed yet? This post is nearly 4 months old.  I am still receiving chat messages that I cannot answer. There should be a clear message to customers when they try to send the chat message indicating that the designer is "away" or whatever will give the message that we will not see their message. I have added a note about this and provided an email at the start of my About page but they don't seem to see that.
