Pedestal Sign Problem

I just received this question from a customer regarding a free-standing pedestal sign:

"Is there any type of coating or lamination you can do to the front of the sign to protect the ink? It comes off so easily with slightest of wet wipes."

I have referred them to Zazzle, but if this is true then it needs looking into by Zazzle quality control because I wouldn't expect a sign to have such a poor standard of printing.

From my days working in an art department: big signs like these are probably printed on large-format plotters, then attached to foam core boards. Being that plotters are just huge inkjet printers, the printed paper is very susceptible to smudges from oily fingers and easily ruined with water or other liquids. To prevent this, we placed the printed pages inside foam core pouches with foam core on the bottom and a plastic laminate on the top. Then the whole “sandwich” was run through a huge laminator machine. The final product had a foam core backing with a waterproof laminate coating on the top. No more smudges or damage from liquids. Zazzle should add an option for laminate coatings for posters for an additional charge. Problem solved.

The pedestal signs are plastic, though.

There are all kinds of "wet wipes" out there formulated & marketed for different purposes but most contain some kind of oil, glycerin and/or alcohol all of which can be pretty effective removers. A lot of artists know that "baby wipes" are great for cleaning hands & brushes, and I've learned from experience that a tiny bit of baby oil or face lotion on a cotton ball will easily wipe away mascara. I would never use a "wet wipe" on naked printing without expecting possible negative consequences. If you look at the review pictures for the pedestal signs many of them show that the customer put their own plastic covering over them, and the product description doesn't say anything about being able to wipe clean. So I don't know but I would chalk this up to uhm, user-error rather than quality control.
