I have noticed this for a while, and I have not figured out what is causing it.
I have all of my poster prints posted with the aspect ratio of the image, with the default view for customers being the Extra Small. I have "All Options" selected in the product merchandising so they can select whatever size or aspect ratio they want. Customers can choose a different size in the same aspect ratio. Or they can choose a "standard size", like 8x10 or 11x14. However not all of my poster prints behave the same when standard sizes are selected, some crop while others add extra white space around the image.
For example: https://www.zazzle.com/colorful_tricolor_australian_shepherd_art_print-228482490468522319
This image is set to default Extra Small at (11.00" x 14.67") . If a customer instead chooses a standard size like 8x10, the image is cropped, which is what I want.
But for this one: https://www.zazzle.com/cute_blue_gray_kitty_cat_painting_art_print-228876206358089554
The image is set to default Extra Small also at (11.00" x 14.76") . However, if a customer chooses a Standard size like 8x10, instead of cropping the image, it adds a white border. For example, the 8x10 size the white border is on the left and right, for 13x19, it is on the top and bottom.
I want all of my poster prints to CROP when the standard sizes are selected, not add extra white borders to the images. I post them all the same and I don't know why certain ones crop and others add borders.

Exactly! I recently made a poster and noticed the same thing. It was one of my photos and I had some cropping leeway, but it was a real pain to find a cropping that worked across a number of sizes. I remember that happening in the past but for some reason, it seemed worse than I recalled.

Hi Rebecca! Are your file sizes the same and did you choose "fill" instead of "fit" on both listings when creating? If I remember right - once you create the design and before you hit the sell button - you can then choose the size you want to show on the listing. So - even though each show as "Extra Small" on the listing - there could have been a slight variation in the design process that caused the difference with the ability to crop on your posted for sale listings. Only a guess - but hopefully helpful....

@myrubiogarden I chose neither fill nor fit when making my posters.. When you make a Poster print, when you add the image it pops up a box that gives you three choices: add image to current size poster, use nearest standard size, or use exact dimensions of image. I always use the third, so it fills the entire poster.

Hmmm....just did a test and appears the fill/fit does not make a difference like you have stated...only other thing I can think of is the file size....

@myrubiogardenMy files are all very large. I scan my artwork at 600 DPI so the files are large.

I am trying to think of ways to test options that might lead to answers. Have you tried opening the dog product and inserting the cat image into that product ? It would be interesting to see if still have the problem doing it that way.
I also do Postcrossing!
