Text size is drastically changed when tiling is set to "none."

If I have text inside a group that is tiled, and I set tiling to "none," the text is set to an arbitrarily enormous text size.

I think this is probably a bug, and it makes it difficult to work with color variations of grouped and tiled text. The desired behavior in my opinion is for everything in the group to remain the same size, just as a single image does when you un-tile it. That way you can re-color, re-group, and re-tile it and achieve the exact same pattern as before.

I've noticed the same problem and it's pretty much put me off of tiled text designs altogether. The compounding issue is that with the introduction of the new text box functionality (introduced a few years ago) there's no longer a way to create a text box that can expand horizontally. So, when you combine those two issues, it's virtually impossible to create a tiled text design that can be customized by the user. It's a shame because there are just sooo many fun possibilities with tiled text designs, but the way things currently stand, it's nearly impossible to make them work.

@Mark I'm resurrecting this thread because tiling has additional problems now, compared to when I originally posted this. 

When I un-tile a tiled element, it used to be that the element remained in the same position and orientation so that I can make changes to it (e.g., replace it with another colorway) and then re-tile and end up with the same size and position of the pattern. As long as there was no text in the pattern, it worked fine. This is no longer the case. Now, when I un-tile something, the element is un-rotated and placed in some arbitrary position on the page. Also, the original problem with text size remains.

I believe it should work like this: If I un-tile an element or group, that element or group remains in the same orientation and position it had when tiled, with the same font sizes, strokes and effect sizes as it had when it was tiled.

I have had this occur since tiling was added as a feature?

Also the tiled elements move at random once un-tiled
