OK, I give up on my back to school collections that are typed as "cross sell". None of them are happy whether I choose "create custom" or "manage custom" sorts. They of course won't be seen in the MP but are happy in the Collections page or emails. That's not very helpful.
I am forced to us "similar styles & themes" type for them.
Is this a bug and if so, has someone reported it already?

I think it might require a kids T-shirt... even though there are no "required" items, that one may be the key. I have one back to school collection in cross sell that 'unlocked' after a tee was added.

Thanks @PenguinPower I find some of these restrictions problematic at best. I never would have thought that a t-shirt was the key. If the themed design is a pattern that makes no sense.
I'll deal with it and thank you again.

Wouldn’t “back to school” count as a similar theme?

I think that people will use it that way... but by Z's description, not really... I get the idea that they are going for collections of the same item or a few items that have an overall aesthetic like 100 glitter phone cases... or Floral Wedding Suites..
Their text:
- All products should share a similar design aesthetic
- All products should use the same, or similar product type
It seem to me that it's stretching it a bit to use it for stuff like back to school, which can include a lot of different product types. Cross sell does seem like the best fit.. but it is crippled by the "required" products way too often.
